"Here is a definition of ego: An ego is your own idea of what you think other people think you are like." Charles Berner "You have an image in your mind of how you think you appear to others. Then you get the idea that you are that image. You get so involved with other people and with dealing with other people that you get mixed up and think that you are this idea of what other people think you are. But that is not you at all. You and your ego are separate. You are not your ego. You are Divine. One's ego always wants to make a good impression on people; it always wants to be right and not wrong. It wants to be well thought of. The ego is the idea of yourself that you are trying to construct in other people's minds. Trying to present yourself in the best light as Divine builds the ego if you have doubt about what you are. You do not want to be wrong but you may have difficulty in communicating yourself as Divine. If you know you are Divine, you will not build an ego. If you have an ego you will tend to defend yourself. An ego can be invalidated but if you know who you are, you cannot be invalidated. You should treat yourself not as your ego but as yourself. The difficulty comes in trying to communicate yourself to others. Don't present ego. Know yourself as Divine. You will be able to live life best if you think of yourself as Divine and treat yourself as Divine." You, God, Love Life: Self Transformation Principles
