In his book, You, God, Love Life: Self Transformation Principles, Charles Berner summarizes the chapter on Improving Communication:
“… I have discussed the nature of relating, what communication is, what understanding, love, and reality are. I’ve told you the importance of facing a crisis and of putting yourself second. I’ve shared with you a method for handling conscious or unconscious deflections, distractions and deviations from a subject under discussion. You have learned some very valuable keys to relating and improving your ability to go deeper and get closer to others. Remember that we are Divine and are choosing to relate and that life is an ongoing process of increasing our understanding of each other. It's a way to get to know the unknown. Practice the exercises given in these chapters and you will be rewarded with the satisfaction that you are progressing toward the major goal in life of being fully conscious of each other's true nature. Stand behind your communications. Send them directly and be responsible for them. Be there for the other person with love.”  

Reading the words, receiving and understanding what I’m communicating and what Berner is relating is itself an act of education and self improvement.  This is because education is the action of transferring information or data.  In this case from me to you.   That’s pretty remarkable, maybe even miraculous, even though commonplace now.  But a few thousand years ago this form of communication, education and self improvement didn’t exist.  There was no writing, no reading and certainly no printed words… an additional few more thousands of years back and there wasn’t even any sophisticated verbal language. It may seem self evident now but a moment ago you were probably not conscious that education and self improvement was taking place by my act of communication and your act of reading and receiving.

Education is one of the pathways to self improvement.  Education is the transferring of information and data.   It's a valid method of self improvement that's been successful to some degree.  It's been the predominant pathway for humans since their brains began evolving their capacity to think and learn.  Civilizations  around the world have evolved because of education.  In Western culture the zenith of education   began with the Age of Enlightenment during the 16th and 17th Centuries in Europe and continues to this day.    Schools, universities, story telling, the arts, the printed word  and more recently radio, television, video, the internet and electronic media are many of the common pathways used to educate.

Understanding  is another self improvement method that helps people live better lives.    By understanding each other,  people  improve their relationships, becoming more cooperative, less fearful and defensive.   They open up to each other and become closer to one another.
 
Improving  understanding of ones self and others by increasing one's abilities to communicate is a very important self improvement activity

Enlightenment is the third method of self improvement.  Enlightenment is direct knowing.  In the case of self enlightenment, it is the direct knowing of oneself.  It is not about collecting information or data from others as in an educational process. 
 
Self enlightenment is the condition of knowing directly, who you are.  It is not based upon education, or upon what others say or what you read or have heard.  It is a self evident fact that originates from your subjective knowingness and needs no outside validation.  One who is self enlightened acts with a complete conviction coming from their own source of being.
